Josh and a stoutly built woman came into her field of vision as she awoke. They each gave her a brief nod and went on with their work. They are probably setting up breakfast, remembered Vivi. The woman must be Carla. She was looking at Vivi. She was stocky, and that made her look stronger than she really was. Vivi averted her gaze and looked at the mountains of blankets that kept rising and falling. Most of them were asleep.
Josh came to the edge of the camp and struck his hands together several times. âBreakfast!â
Sleepily, the sonoe poked their heads up and made their way out from under their blankets.
âI hope itâs good,â Rye muttered, rubbing his tired eyes, âbecause I had a terrible nightâs sleep.â
âAt least you had terrible sleep,â remarked the man who had dug out of the blankets on his left. His black, curly hair stood out in all directions. His furrowed face turned towards her. He has to be Gero or Ash, Vivian thought. She straightened up and pushed the blankets to the side. The other sonoe folded their blankets neatly and reached for the bundles of fresh clothes that they had placed near their beds. Vivi copied their movements. Uncertain, she remained standing with her clothes in her hand. Was there a kind of changing room or something? She looked around and met Foxâs gaze.
âBehind the supply tent on the left,â he smiled. Thank you, she mouthed silently and followed his directions. There was a sloping shed made of jute stretched between the trees, which was used as a changing room. Outside of the structure, there was a kind of fountain and a vertical wooden box in which she found toothbrushes, combs and the like. In fact, her name was written on a cup. The others must have prepared this yesterday. Vivi drew water, washed her face and brushed her teeth. There were two more cups in the box: Danaâs and Carlaâs. There must have been a similar shed for the men somewhere else.
âMorning.â Dana showed up. Her red curls stood out to all sides like springs.
âMorning.â Vivi nodded at her. The clan leader disappeared into the tent, and Vivi ran back to camp. The others were sitting in a circle. Everyone had a plate in front of them and a knife in hand. Bowls full of fruit and a plate with ham and cheese were in the middle. She sat down on one of the free chairs and picked up her plate and knife.
The man with the furrowed face sat next to her.
âWe havenât met yet,â he noted and reached for a slice of bread that Josh was holding out to him. âI am Gero.â
âDid everything work out with the change?â Dana asked him as she sat down.
Carla nodded, answering for him. âThere were no incidents.â
âVery good,â Nero remarked.
âDid Ash tell you anything else before he went on patrol?â Dana wanted to know.
âEverything was okay at the main centre.â
Worried, she frowned. âIs that all he told you?â
âHe was too tired, I guess,â Carla explained.
